Controlling Diesel Fuel Costs for Your Truck

Diesel fuel is high, but that doesn’t mean you need to put on Mad Max gear and fight it out. Some states where you fuel up is more expensive than others. In order to avoid a Mad Max dystopia, OTR truckers should fuel up their trucks strategically to avoid paying too much for Diesel.

California is the Worst

If you want to avoid paying the most for fuel. Avoid fueling up in California when possible. California may make for a great idea for a song, but for fuel you’ll painfully will pay for it. The average gallon of diesel at the time of this article is $6.30. Not only is California expensive, but they are seriously against truckers in general. If you are a trucker from California, I suggest you leave and move to a better state like Texas. 

Fueling Plan for the West Coast

If you have to take a load to California, fuel up in Arizona at $5.10 or Nevada at $5.40 instead. And if you have to fuel up in California, only pour enough to get you out of the trucking hellscape that is California. Even Washington and Oregon will save you on fuel. Washington is at $5.70 a gallon and Oregon is at $5.50 on average But, it is best just to pour enough fuel to get you over to a state with cheaper fuel. Fueling up in New Mexico is also recommended with fuel being at $4.95 a gallon.

Texas is the Best

If you are going through Texas at any given time, fuel the truck to full. Texas is the cheapest state to fuel up, and generally they like truckers. At the time of writing this article the average gallon of diesel in Texas was $4.60. That is nearly a 2-dollar difference. When you must pour 100 or more gallons, you would save nearly 200 dollars fueling up in Texas. When fueling up, know the best states for fuel.

Best states for Fuel

Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Mississippi, Arkansas, Kanas, New Mexico, Georgia, Missouri, Alabama, and Nebraska are all states with fuel averaging at or below $5.00 a gallon. These states are your best bet to fuel up in. When traveling through the Midwest and Southeast, fuel up to full without much worries. But, heading Northeast is another story. 

Pennsylvania is the 2nd Worst

While Philadelphia is the city of brotherly love, it shows no love for OTR truckers, from a huge lack of parking and punishing Fuel prices. The average gallon of diesel in Pennsylvania is $6.20 a gallon. While Pennsylvania isn’t quite as bad as California, they seem to hate truckers. However, there are not a lot of good options for fuel in the Northeast. The cheapest you’ll find in the region is $5.90 a gallon and that is in Ohio and West Virginia.

Fueling Plan for the East Coast

The best way to manage fuel costs is to fuel up in slightly cheaper states, and avoid fueling up in full anywhere in the Northeast. Fuel up enough to get you to the next cheaper option. The cheapest option near the Northeast is North Carolina averaging $5.25 a gallon of diesel.

Fuel Prices Suck

Fuel prices suck, but it doesn’t have to drain your profits while on the road. You just need to watch and pour fuel a bit more strategically and save 50-200 dollars at a time. The savings will add up, but you have to avoid pouring too much fuel in the wrong states.
