Maintaining good back health is important for truckers, as they spend long hours sitting in the same position and often need to lift and carry heavy loads. To maintain good back health, truckers can practice good posture while driving, use a lumbar roll to support the natural curvature of their spine.

Here are some other tips for maintaining back health.

Sleeping on the Floor

  • You are what you sleep on. The harder bed makes you harder and the soft bed makes you softer. Studies show that Sleeping on the floor improves mental resilience and ability to adapt and improves joint function and blood circulation. Actual process of getting up from the floor and making your bed forces you to go on hands and knees and go to odd positions helping stretch your lower back.

  • Mattress marketing is not based on any studies or research. We are forced to believe that we need to invest in the best bed and best possible mattress. And by best usually it means the most expensive one. That is as misguided as the 3 month salary rule for buying engagement ring. As you can’t buy love with an expensive engagement ring you can’t buy a good sleep with an expensive mattress.

  • How matters more than what. Just as high end shoes won’t make a lazy guy a pro runner, no overpriced mattress will make you into a pro sleeper. Healthy before sleep routine will do you much more good than any expensive mattress with NASA technologies.

  • Sleeping on the floor is like eating broccoli. It does not look appealing, but it is better for you in the long run.

Try replacing your truck mattress with a Japanese Futon

Japanese futons, which are traditionally thin, firm mattresses that are laid directly on the floor or on a wooden frame, may provide some benefits for back health. Because they are firm and do not have a lot of cushioning, futons can help keep the spine aligned in a neutral position and prevent the hips from sinking too far into the mattress. This can help reduce strain on the lower back and promote proper spinal alignment. Replacing your truck mattress with a Japanese style futon would help.

Weight Loss

f you ever felt back pain, you might know how exhausting it can be. Research clearly shows that there is a direct link between being overweight and having back pain.. Excess weight increases the risk for back pain, joint pain. The lower back is particularly vulnerable to weight-related pressure. According to statistics 42.4% of Adults in the United States of America are obese.

Losing weight can help to prevent back issues, and reduces stress on other joints as well. Dropping just a few pounds can make a big difference to your back. Every pound on the body equals 4 pounds of pressure on the spine.

Seat Ergonomics for truck drivers

Adjust the depth and height of the seat so your feet can comfortably reach gas, break and clutch pedals. The backrest should be adjusted so the steering wheel can be reached with a slight angle at elbows. Adjust lumbar support to your liking to avoid hollow back or hunchback. When seated hips should be at the approximate height of your knee. You should sit with your buttocks against the back of the seat and upper body lean back to the backrest.

Hopefully, following these few tips will help reduce back pain to keep you trucking.
